Book Club: American Novels

For November, the book club will read The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, a haunting and lyrical novel that examines the bonds of community and the complexities of family life. Told through the collective voice of neighborhood boys reflecting on their youth, the story centers on the five Lisbon sisters—whose sheltered existence and tragic fate continue to captivate and disturb the community that surrounds them.

Taller de literatura en inglés

Across four weeks, we will read the novel in four parts and meet every Friday at 6:30 PM to discuss, reflect and share personal impressions. Each session will combine close reading and thematic exploration with open conversation, making room for both language practice and deeper engagement with the text.

Each session will balance literary analysis with open conversation, making space for both language practice and deeper engagement with the text.

Possible Discussion Themes:

  • Family as protection and as confinement
  • Community memory and collective storytelling
  • Adolescence, mystery, and the search for meaning
  • Gender, power, and control within the family unit
  • Nostalgia, loss, and the unreliability of memory

Language & Learning Focus (for ESL):

  • Describing family relationships and dynamics
  • Practicing narrative and descriptive language
  • Sharing personal reflections on adolescence, family, and community
