Book Club: American Novels

This November, our Book Club will read The Color Purple, Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about resilience, sisterhood and the journey toward self-worth in the Jim Crow South.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

As part of our November theme, Stories of Belonging – Home, Community & the Outsider, we’ll explore Alice Walker’s acclaimed novel, a powerful story of identity, resilience and the search for freedom and connection.
Through Celie’s journey, we’ll reflect on how relationships can shape our sense of self, how we find our voice in the face of exclusion and how sisterhood and community can become sources of strength and belonging.

An immersive literary experience in English

Join us for a journey into American literature in a welcoming and engaging environment. Each month we'll read one novel and come together to discuss its themes, characters, language and cultural context.

Our session combines close reading, literary analysis and open conversation, creating a space where participants can exchange ideas, develop critical thinking and strengthen their English through meaningful discussion.

Whether you're an avid reader or simply looking to reconnect with literature in English, this book club offers a unique opportunity to experience a remarkable novel alongside fellow literature enthusiasts.

Discussion Themes

Throughout the session, we'll explore topics such as:

  • Identity and the search for belonging
  • Sisterhood and the power of female solidarity
  • Trauma, healing, and spirituality
  • Race, gender roles, and systemic oppression
  • Self-discovery and the journey to independence
  • Voice, storytelling, and the epistolary form
  • Symbolism, imagery, and narrative style

Language & Learning Focus

In addition to literary discussion, participants will naturally develop their English through:

  • Expanding advanced vocabulary in context
  • Discussing abstract ideas with confidence
  • Expressing opinions and supporting interpretations
  • Improving fluency through guided conversation
  • Exploring literary language and stylistic devices
  • Building cultural awareness through American literature

No prior literary analysis experience is required. However, an advanced level of English (C1 or above) is recommended to fully enjoy the readings and participate actively in the discussions.
